The Sacrament of the Eucharist
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life, the sacrament in which Catholics receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Instituted by Christ at the Last Supper, the Eucharist is a profound mystery of faith, uniting us to Christ and to one another as members of His Body, the Church.
The Meaning of the Eucharist
The word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek word eucharistia, meaning thanksgiving. In the celebration of the Mass, bread and wine are consecrated by the priest and transformed into the true Body and Blood of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. This miracle, known as transubstantiation, is at the heart of Catholic worship.
Receiving the Eucharist is an intimate encounter with Christ. It nourishes the soul, strengthens our unity with the Church, and empowers us to live as disciples of Jesus in the world.
Who Can Receive the Eucharist?
Catholics who have been baptized, received First Holy Communion, and are in a state of grace (free from mortal sin) are invited to receive the Eucharist. Those who are aware of serious sin should receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before approaching Holy Communion.
Children typically receive their First Holy Communion around the age of seven, following a period of preparation that includes catechesis and the Sacrament of Confession.
The Importance of the Eucharist in Catholic Life
The Eucharist is central to the life of the Church and to each Catholic’s spiritual journey. By receiving Holy Communion, we:
Are united more deeply with Christ.
Receive grace to resist sin and grow in holiness.
Are strengthened as members of the Body of Christ, called to love and serve others.
Participate in the Paschal Mystery, recalling Christ’s sacrifice for our salvation.
Eucharistic Adoration
Beyond the Mass, the Eucharist is also adored in prayer and worship through Eucharistic Adoration. This devotion allows the faithful to spend time in the presence of Christ, deepening their relationship with Him through prayer and contemplation.
