The sacraments of the Catholic Church are grouped into three main categories:
Sacraments of Initiation
These sacraments lay the foundation of Christian life, bringing individuals fully into the Church.
- Baptism – The first sacrament, cleansing original sin and welcoming a person into the Church.
- Eucharist – The reception of Christ’s Body and Blood, nourishing the soul.
- Confirmation – The strengthening of faith through the Holy Spirit, completing initiation.
Sacraments of Healing
These sacraments provide spiritual and physical healing.
- Reconciliation (Confession/Penance) – The forgiveness of sins through God’s mercy.
- Anointing of the Sick – Spiritual and sometimes physical healing, especially for the seriously ill or dying.
Sacraments of Vocation
These sacraments dedicate individuals to serve the Church and others.
- Matrimony (Marriage) – The union of a man and a woman in a covenant of love and family life.
- Holy Orders – The ordination of bishops, priests, and deacons to serve the Church.
Each sacrament is an outward sign of inward grace, instituted by Christ to give spiritual life and strength to the faithful.
