The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, instituted by Christ to offer grace, strength, and healing to those suffering from serious illness or the burdens of advanced age. This sacrament provides spiritual, and sometimes even physical, healing, unites the sick person with Christ’s passion, and prepares the individual for their journey to eternal life if death is near.

Biblical Foundation

The roots of this sacrament are found in Sacred Scripture. In the Letter of James, we read:

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15)

This passage illustrates the Church’s ongoing mission to care for the sick and administer the healing power of Christ through anointing with blessed oil.

Who Can Receive the Sacrament?

The Anointing of the Sick is available to any baptized Catholic who is experiencing serious illness, preparing for major surgery, or suffering from the challenges of old age. It is not only for those who are at the point of death but is meant to strengthen anyone facing a significant health crisis.

How the Sacrament Is Celebrated

A priest administers the sacrament using the Oil of the Sick, which is blessed by the bishop at the annual Chrism Mass. The rite typically includes:

  • A prayer of faith

  • Laying on of hands

  • Anointing of the forehead and hands with the sacred oil

These elements signify God’s grace at work, bringing spiritual healing, peace, and strength.

Effects of the Sacrament

The Anointing of the Sick offers several spiritual benefits, including:

  • The forgiveness of sins (if the person is unable to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation)

  • Strength, peace, and courage to endure suffering

  • Possible physical healing, if it aligns with God’s will

  • Preparation for the final journey to eternal life, if death is imminent
